Nike is the market leader when it comes to sports apparel. Originally set up as Blue Ribbon Sports in 1964 by Phil Knight and Bill Bowerman, the company changed its name to ‘Nike’ in 1971. This year the company celebrates their 50th year. To being the most successful sports apparel company in the world from just an idea that Phil Knight had in college, the company has come a long way.
Back then Bill Bowerman was the Track & Field coach at University of Oregon. Phil Knight completed an MBA at Stanford, visited Japan and persuaded the Tiger shoe manufacturer to let him distribute the shoes in the USA. He sent a sample to Bowerman who offered to become partner as he was already interested in footwear (athletic) design. Phil Knight founded the company with $600 matched by another $600 from Bowerman and the rest is history.
